What if I Have Asthma But Need an Ignition Interlock in New York?

If you have asthma or a medical condition of any kind that makes it more difficult to provide your tests at the New York standard, the breath volume of your device can be lowered to the national NHTSA standard of 1.2 liters.

The state allows Ignition Interlock vendors to lower the device’s breath volume if you provide the applicable paperwork and have it authorized. Here’s what you need to do to lower the breath volume of your device due to a medical condition such as asthma.

Lowering Ignition Interlock’s Breath Volume in New York

You must provide to your court New York’s medical Ignition Interlock form signed by your doctor. Once the court authorizes your form, you can provide it to your State Authority. The State Authority will then authorize your vendor, such as Smart Start, to lower the device’s breath volume.
