A state-certified Ignition Interlock Device will have fuel cell technology, which is alcohol-specific. It is a robust and reliable way to detect someone’s BrAC, which is why it’s a requirement for many DUI or DWI cases in the U.S.

Although the Interlock Device cannot detect the consumption of prescription drugs, it’s never a good idea to get behind the wheel knowing you may be too impaired to drive. Not only that, but it is illegal to drive with a BAC level of .08 or more in the U.S., except for Utah, which has a .05 BAC level. Keep in mind that some common prescriptions like asthma inhalers can cause low level readings in your Interlock Device. Make sure to swish some water and wait a couple of minutes before taking your Interlock Device tests.
