Starting Your Smart Start Washington Ignition Interlock Program
The first step you need to take is to schedule your Ignition Interlock installation appointment. Smart Start makes this extremely easy by giving you three options. Once you’ve scheduled your installation appointment at your nearest Smart Start service center, make sure you have the following items with you when you arrive.
- Proof of vehicle registration
- If you need to install the Interlock Device in someone else’s vehicle, provide the Non-Owned Vehicle Installation Approval form. (The form is also available in Spanish.)
- Driver’s license
- Another form of ID
- Address verification

In Washington, you have six minutes to pull over safely and take your random running retest before resuming your trip. The End of Your Smart Start Washington Ignition Interlock Program
Once you approach the end of your requirement period, Smart Start will send a Certificate of Compliance to the DOL. You’ll need to request the certificate, so make sure you know when you are nearing the end of your requirement period. The certificate will be submitted if none of the following occurred in the last four months or 180 days of your program:
- Attempting to start your vehicle with a breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) of .04 or higher
- Failure to take or pass any required running retest
- Missing scheduled maintenance for your Ignition Interlock such as calibrations, repairs, monitoring, inspection or replacing the device
